WALESA. MAN OF HOPE | WAŁĘSA. CZŁOWIEK Z NADZIEI
dir. Andrzej Wajda, Poland 2013, 124’ (in Polish with English subtitles)

How could one man have such an impact on the modern world? Walesa is an attempt at capturing the metamorphosis of a simple man - from an electric technician at the Gdansk shipyard who fought for labour rights to a charismatic leader who awoke the desire for freedom in millions of people and led to changes that exceeded their wildest dreams.

Andrzej Wajda's feature focuses on Lech Wałęsa, particularly the first 20 years of his work. The film begins with events that took place in the 1970s, and ends with the speech Lech Wałęsa made in the US Congress in 1989. Wajda attempts to capture the essence of the transformation of simple common working man into a charismatic leader who managed to liberate dreams of freedom that rested in the hearts of millions, and gave the spark for major changes in society.

"This is the most difficult film I have ever made (...)" Andrzej Wajda
